CLARET BHAVAN, KURAVILANGADU

Claret Bhavan, Kuravilangadu is the mother house of the Claretian Missionaries in India. It is from here that the Claretian presence in India began to sprout and then flourish. Juridically it comes under the Dioceses of Palai, in the district of Kerala. The Bishop of Palai, Mar Sebastian Vayalil, who recruited the first Indian Vocations for Claretians was instrumental in establishing the first Claretian House in the sub-continent. The foundation stone for Claret Bhavan was laid on 31 March 1970 and the house was blessed on 24 October 1971. The first lessons of missionary and religious life learned from here helped many of the Indian Claretians to have a basic love towards the congregation, an openness to work for spreading the message of Christ in the style of Claret and to work for the uplift of the poor in the society with commitment and sincerity. Students here get opportunity for the integral growth of their personhood – spiritual, physical, psychological and intellectual. Besides the formation of minor seminary students, this house functions as a center for vocation facilitation. From 1996 when St. Thomas Dependent Delegation was formed, Claret Bhavan served as its office. Till July 2005 it served as the curia of St. Thomas Province. The beloved departed brothers from St. Province are laid to rest in the cemetery at Claret Bhavan. A new building Maria Bavan, near Claret Bhavan was built and blessed in 2017. It will serve as a home for our elderly brothers. As Claret Bhavan celebrates its Golden Jubilee, it serves as ‘Alam Mater for 50 batches of students till today.

The Province of St. Thomas

On July 16, 2004, the Independent Delegation of St. Thomas (India) became a Province. This new Province was born fundamentally in order to respond to the need felt by the Claretians of the Syro-Malabar Rite. It maintained the same structure it had as a Delegation. In the month of January 2005, the First Provincial Chapter was celebrated. The General Superior encouraged everyone to seek in Jesus the light to illuminate the new path and to allow themselves to be led, as servants of the Word, by a great passion for Christ and for humanity. The document of the last General Chapter was discussed and a new provincial government was elected for the next three years. The Claretians of the Province of St. Thomas dedicate their work to the marginalized in the area of the Andhra Pradesh tribes and to the diaspora migrants of the Syro-Malabar rite.
